“Breast cancer is a treatable disease and chances of survival are higher if it’s detected in time. Breast cancer can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle, being aware of family medical histories while the simplest way is to do a self-breast examination”, said Dr Rajan Sahu, senior consultant, Surgical Oncology at Paras Hospital, while raising awareness on ‘Breast Conservation and Implants in Breast Cancer treatment’ on the occasion of World Cancer Day.

With being the most common type of cancer in women, breast cancer accounts for 14% of cancers in Indian women. It is reported that with every four minutes, an Indian woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Cancer is increasing every year and as per 2018 report, 1,62,468 new breast cancer cases were registered in India besides 87,090 reported deaths.
“Also, women can self-diagnose their condition and know of the presence of lumps or masses that suggest cancerous outgrowths. Self detection is important to diagnose the disease on time”, Dr Sahu further said.

“Mostly in India, breast cancer is detected at the last stage due to which fatality is at rise. The reasons behind the late detection of the disease are ignorance by the women, fear of treatment or loss of her breast and poverty. However, we can perform surgery on the breasts via construction and save it, if the cancer is diagnosed timely. Even if the breast needs to be removed, we can reconstruct the breast either in the same sitting or at a later date”, Dr Sahu said.
Dr Sahu added that implants and autologous tissue methods can be used to reconstruct the breasts.

While detailing the breast implants and reconstruction techniques, Dr Sahu said, “Implants and reconstructions are a common breast restoration option as the procedure is quite simple and requires less time for the oncologic procedure. Also, the patients get recover in short time period. For reconstruction of the breast, we do not require donors. For patients, breast reconstruction surgery can help improve confidence in regards to appearance, restore self-confidence, and also allows comfort in wearing clothing.”
