Everything you need to know about heart palpitations

CHANDIGARH

Have you ever felt your heart skip a beat, flutter, or beat too fast? Heart palpitations are the term for this emotion or experience. It may not last long, but it might cause individuals to get anxious. While most of the time they are innocuous and are caused by worry, stress, pregnancy, strenuous physical exercise or excess coffee, acid reflux, or hormonal changes, they should not be ignored since they might indicate an underlying cardiac problem.

Heart palpitations and their causes

But what causes these heart palpitations in the first place? According to Dr. Kler, this can occur as a result of tachycardia, irregular heartbeats, or powerful cardiac contractions caused by volume overload in the heart, or as a result of excessive blood shunting from the left to the right chambers, as in an atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect.

They can also happen when the mitral or aortic valves (both of which are on the left side of the heart) leak. Aortic stenosis causes palpitations owing to strong cardiac contractions.

One of the reasons is anxiety.

Dr. Kler adds many people with palpitations have a normal heart on Echo and the major problem is cardiac rhythm problems, citing worry as one of the common causes of heart palpitations. “These irregular palpitations can originate in the upper or lower chambers of the heart, and the majority of them can be completely treated by Radio Frequency Ablation, which is a non-surgical treatment,” says the specialist.

Treatment for palpitations in the heart

According to the cardiologist, therapy will differ from instance to case.
– If the heart has a hole, it must be repaired.
– If a valve is leaking, valve surgery (repair or replacement) is the solution.

Using a structurally normal heart, most palpitations originating in the upper or lower chamber can be treated with Radio Frequency Ablation. Supraventricular (PSVT) or Ventricular Palpitations are caused by anxiety and require counseling or psychiatric assistance.

How can you avoid heart palpitations?
“Apart from lifestyle modifications, recording ECG during a palpitation episode is the best technique to detect the specific cause of any palpitations.” If this is not feasible, we can do an electrophysiology examination in the EP lab under local anaesthetic, and if aberrant tachycardia is found, RFA can be used to treat it.
