FACTS ABOUT CHANDRASEKHARA VENKATA RAMAN

C.V. Raman was a great Indian physicist born on 7th November, 1888 and left the world on 21st November, 1970. He made great advances in light scattering for which he is known all around the world. Here are some great facts about him:

1.He was given the job of first Palit Physics Professor in University of Calcutta in 1917 but he left the government job for his own reasons. Getting a government job at that time was very difficult so it was a big thing.

2.When Raman was a professor in Calcutta University, he also worked and did his research at Indian Association For The Cultivation Of Science to which he contributed greatly.

3. In Indian Association For The Cultivation Of Science he did such a great research that he was able to win a Noble Prize in Physics on February 28, 1928. He was able to understand the light scattering affect and was called the Raman Effect. People know this concept worldwide today.

4.There was another contributor to the Raman Effect who is barely known. The great K.S. Krishnan helped Raman with his research. They both had several differences due to which they didn’t share the Noble Prize. However, Raman appreciated his contribution while receiving the prize.

5.During 1928, C.V. Raman was the only Asian and a non-white person to win a Noble Prize during that time.

6.Raman had always hoped to win a Noble Prize and his dream came true in 1928. He was to receive the prize in Sweden. Out of excitement he booked his tickets in July for the award winning ceremony in November.

7.Raman was also interested in music. He did some experiments with acoustics and was the first person to figure out the algorithm of Indian instruments like Tabla.
