LEUKEMIA: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment available

CHANDIGARH

Leukemia is a category of diseases that causes the body to produce uncontrolled, abnormal blood cells. It occurs as a consequence of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells’ malignant metamorphosis, which allows them to develop as progenitors for both myeloid and lymphoid cells.

The causes of this disorder are listed below:

Body systems have a fixed rate of development and a certain period at which they are supposed to die. If this process is disrupted, either too many cells are created or the cells do not even die when they should, which can cause leukemia or cancer.

“Resulting in a build-up of abnormal cells, which reduces the number of healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets and causes leukemia’s telltale signs and symptoms, “says an expert.

Here are some Leukemia signs and symptoms that warn you to consult a doctor:

  • Fever or chills
  • Fatigue,
  • weakness
  • Frequent or severe infections
  • due to a deficiency in healthy white blood cells
  • Organomegaly or abnormal enlargement of the spleen or liver
  • Easy bleeding due to a possible drop in platelet count
  • Bone pain or soreness

There are various treatment options available as it depends upon the health condition and body type:

  • Chemotherapy, involves administering anti-cancer drugs that target fast-dividing cells.
  • Large-dose chemotherapy combined with a stem cell transplant – In this procedure, stem cells (which are undifferentiated cells that will divide further to produce myeloid or leukemoid cell lines) are extracted from the patient’s blood and kept separately. Next, we administer high doses of alkylating chemicals, a type of chemotherapy, to destroy both normal and aberrant body cells. Finally, we re-transfer the stem cells into the body of the patient and await for them to repop
  • Targeted therapy: These really are specialized medications that specifically target a certain type of cell according to the results of IHC/Flow cytometry and the biopsy report.

Supportive therapy includes things like blood transfusions, platelet infusions, antibacterial and fungal treatments, and other things as necessary. Radiation therapy is a method that employs ionising radiation.
