As many as 16140 saplings would be planted across the district on August 24, on the occasion of Van Mahotsav, which would be presided over by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh at a state level function in Mohali, said Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori.
Divulging the details, the Deputy Commissioner said that while the Chief Minister would launch the mega plantation drive during the state level events, the similar drives would be started in the districts simultaneously. He added that the forest department has selected 30 locations in the district, where over 16 thousands saplings would be planted in a single day. These places included village Muthada Kalan, Phillaur City, Goraya, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Civil Hospital Phillaur, DAV Public School Phillaur, Police Station Noormahal, Noormahal City, KV-II, KV-III, village Jodhe, Eidgah, Urban Estate Phase-1 and Dhina, CRPF campus, Military Area Jalandhar Cantt, Jalandhar City, 91 Sub Area, ITBP, School & Parks, PAP Ground, Opposite DAV College Jalandhar, NIT campus, Adampur, Jalandhar City, Bhogpur, Jalandhar, Sinjh Ground, and Birpind Sidhwa station.
The DC said that this drive would be carried out with the help of local NGOs and government establishment wherein plantation will take place at their respective premises. Underlining the need to plant more trees to make Jalandhar clean, green and pollution free, the DC said that it was the need of hour to check the environmental pollution in the county. He asked the people to come forward to make this plantation drive a grand success as this gigantic task could not be accomplished without their active support and participation. Thori also asked the Panchayats, youth clubs and schools besides social, religious and non government organizations to contribute towards this noble initiative.
Pointing out further, Divisional Forest Officer Vikram Kundra said that during the plantation drive trees of native species like Shisham, Arjuna, Drek, Neem, Kadam, ornamental species, Flowering plants, and others would be planted during the drive. Likewise, he said that on the occasion the kids would be encouraged to adopt one tree each and ensure their proper growth and upkeep. The DFO said that the main thrust of the drive was to make younger generations an active partner of this campaign for planting more and more trees. Notably, a total of 4,89,500 saplings had been planted in the district to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, he added.
