PUNJAB: THE BASE OF NARCOTICS

Drug use and addiction is becoming a major problem in India. Though efforts are being made to eradicate the problem, it is difficult to eliminate the smugglers completely. There has been found a heroin trade of 140,000 crores in India. The demand of drugs is increasing along with an increase in the population of India.
To check the spread of the problem, Narcotics Control Bureau is in touch with several other nations including Western Europe, Canada, Africa, Australia, South America, and West Asian countries. Narcotics Control Bureau has concluded that around 360 metric tonnes of heroin is distributed across India every year. There are over two million consumers of heroin who consume an average of 1000kgs of heroin in a day. The numbers are dreadful.
Out of all the cities in India, Punjab is the worst affected. A number of arrests every year are made due to smuggling of drugs in Punjab and it mostly contain the youth. A major role in finding such smugglers is played by the government who identify the drug syndicates which operate from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Goa. Several of them have been found to be linked with ISI in Afghanistan. A link with Columbian Drug Cartels has also been detected. They are the ones supplying cocaine to India.

The main route for smuggling all the illegal stuff inside India is mainly through the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. A Qatar based syndicate is responsible for distribution of drugs in Kerala, Chennai and other South Indians States. The smugglers pose as poor people looking for job and secretly carry on the work of disturbing drugs. Narcotics Control Bureau has kept a strict eye on all borders of India to restrict the movement and smuggling of drugs in the country.
