3 foods you must avoid for constipation relief

CHANDIGARH

Summertime is notorious for constipation, since the extreme heat may quickly contribute to dehydration. While fiber-rich meals can soften your stools and aid with bowel movements, certain foods might have the reverse effect, making your stool dry and hard. If you are already constipated, avoid the items listed below at all costs.

If you’re constipated, an Ayurveda specialist urges you to avoid these three Cs.

1. Cumin
Cumin is beneficial to digestion, but it is also dry and absorbent, which might aggravate constipation.
“In Ayurveda, cumin is known as Jeeraka (derived from the word jeerna)” (which means digestion). Jeeraka therefore means ‘something which digests.’ It helps digestion, is laghu (light indigestion), but also rooksha (drying in nature) and grahi (the one that absorbs), so it’s great for hunger, diarrhea, and IBS, but not constipation, according to the expert.

2. Curd
Curd is heavy to digest and absorbent in nature, according to Ayurveda, and should be avoided if you have constipation.
“Curd is ruchya (improves flavor), ushna (hot in nature), and vatajit (balances vata), but it is also guru (heavy to digest) and grahi (absorbent in nature, similar to cumin), making it incompatible with constipation.”

3. Caffeine

Caffeine use can promote dehydration and increase constipation, so if you believe it would help your bowel motions, think again.
“We all assume that coffee stimulates the muscles in our digestive tract, making bowel movements easier. However, caffeine (particularly too much caffeine) induces dehydration, which can have the reverse effect and produce constipation. If you’re constipated, avoid it or go for decaf,” advises health experts.

Even if they aren’t constipated, the Ayurveda expert recommends her followers not to start the day with tea or coffee. Warm water or a tsp of cow ghee, she claims, would do the trick
