CHANDIGARH

Covid-19 pandemic brought an array of challenges that had mental health repercussions for everyone, including children and adolescents having mixed emotions of grief, anxiety and sadness.

Covid-19 has laid an adverse effect on every single person starting from children to the old age group. Due to the spread of the disease, there was a shutdown of the whole nation and people were homebound for a few months but the children were homebound for around one year which has affected their mental health.

This experience was not common for the children to see the negativity, various types of emotions such as fears, anger, loss, sadness etc. for many reasons.
This prolonged Covid 19 pandemic has worsened the situation.

Some of the problems which were faced by the kids during this pandemic are:

1. Academic – As the lockdown was imposed throughout the nation, all the educational institutes were closed and the mode of classes switched from physical to inline mode. Students faced many problems in this new mode of studies, as they loved to go to school, meet friends and play altogether. However, this pandemic curtailed all the enjoyment of the children. In online mode, they had to sit in front of the screens for long hours, and one of the important disadvantages of the online mode was the internet issue, smartphone. Some of the parents cannot afford to buy the smartphone which was the lack point.

2. Outdoor activities – In the growth of the children, outdoor activities play a vital role as they boost their immune system, brain development, and all of a sudden it came to halt as the parks were closed for a few months to prevent the spread of infection.

3. Sluggish – Staying indoors into their comfort zone made the children lazy. They feel difficulty in waking up, even their eating habits get disturbed.

4. Screen Time – In Covid times, screen time has increased especially for the kids due to the online classes as well as for playing games.

5. Social Isolation- At a growing age, children love to play in the parks, try to involve themselves in learning new things, grasp information from the surroundings but due to Covid-19 they got isolated in their homes which made them irritating, stubborn and lazy. When things will come back to normal then kids will face difficulty in interacting with others and even going to school.

6. Health – Development of the brain gets disturbed on being isolated, effects on the eyesight, fatigue and most important, physical activity has influenced the health care system very badly due to this pandemic.
