Is antibiotics good treatment for every infection? Here’s the answers!

CHANDIGARH

Taking antibiotics when they’re not needed won’t help you, and its side effects can still cause harm. Antibiotics are not the solution when you’re sick. Sometimes, the best treatment when you’re sick is over-the-counter medication or home remedies.

“We’ve been saying this for a long time that we need to be using short-course antibiotic regimens due to its side effects”, said medical researchers.

If taken in excess, antibiotics can cause some side effects in your body that range from minor to severe health problems, including—rashes, nausea, diarrhoea, postpone or prepone the menstruation cycle, or acne scars.

As per doctors, there are some ailments which do not need any antibiotics and can be cured through patience or home remedies. These include:

  • Colds and runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow, or green just drink ginger tea twice and take steam which will give you quick treatment.
  • Most sore throats (except strep throat)
  • Flu
  • Minor headache which can be cured through cold or heat compressors.
  • Stomach pain as it can be due to the acidity which causes pain.

If your doctor is prescribing you an antibiotic, then follow these tips for better result:

  • Take them exactly as your doctor prescribes.
  • Take medicine with warm or normal water rather than soda or cold beverages.
  • Don’t take medicine twice, while thinking it will give you faster results.
  • When your course will get finished, consult your doctor before repeating it for more days.

While consulting doctor, you should explain if you:

  • Have any Drug allergy
  • Pregnant or trying to conceive
  • Breastfeeding mother
  • Suffering from kidney or liver infection

While taking antibiotics, keep in mind these ‘Don’ts’:

  • At first if someone is facing the same problem like yours then it does not mean that you share your antibiotics with others.
  • Don’t keep your medicines for future use. If some medicines are leftover then you can return to your pharmacist or safely discard leftover medicines.
  • Likewise we said above that you can’t share your medicines same as you can’t take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. This may make you even sicker, or cause side effects.
